Barnard Lee Smith, 74, of Rutherford College, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, September 28, 2026 following a period of declining health.

Barnard was born March 4, 1952 in Burke County, a son of the late Harold Eugene and Rosemary Shirley Barnes Smith. He taught Social Studies at both Morganton Junior High and Freedom High School for many years. He loved history and had a particular enthusiasm for the Civil War era. He could often be found reading and discussing that topic. He had a passion for his students and taught them on the field as well as in the classroom. He coached basketball, football, and track. One of his favorite ways to pass the time was traveling.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of fifty-one years, Libby Smith; daughter, Summer Elizabeth Lail (Zach); brother, Hal Smith (Bobbie); a special niece, Wendy Smith; and numerous other nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, October 2, 2026 at Valdese First Baptist Church at 6 PM with Rev. Dr. Josh Lail officiating.
