Mr. Burl Edward Lane, 92, of Icard, passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at his residence, following a period of declining health.
Burl was born on November 15, 1933, in Burke County to the late Spurgeon Lane and Dora Mae Epley and grew up in the South Mountain Children’s Home. On June 4, 1955, he married his beloved wife Veda, and they remained together for 71 wonderful years. He was drafted into the Army in 1957 and was stationed at Fort Benning, Georgia. After his honorable discharge he returned home and went to work for General Electric for 40 years until his retirement at age 62. He was a member at East Valdese Baptist Church. Burl was a Godly man, a servant of Christ, a hard-working man of integrity. He read his bible daily, and his strong faith in the Lord was evident to all who met him. Burl loved his family immensely, loved vacationing with them at the beach, and enjoyed being outdoors, either gardening or tinkering around.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by several siblings, and a son in-law, Greg Cannon.
Surviving is his wife, Veda Louise Chronister Lane of the home, and two daughters, Sandra Johnston and husband Don, and Linda Cannon. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Emily Oliverio and husband Steve, Katie McAlpine and husband William, and Christopher Cannon and wife Mekenzie, five great-grandchildren, Cameron, Judith, Caleb, Luke and Stella, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at 11:00 A.M. at East Valdese Baptist Church with Rev. Chip Stallings officiating and Rev. Ken Gillen, with military honors provided by the N.C. National Guard. A private interment will be held at a later date, at Catawba Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends on Monday, August 3, 2026, from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese.
Memorials may be sent to East Valdese Baptist Church, 101 Eldred St. SE, Valdese, NC 28690 or Carolina Caring Hospice, 3975 Robinson Rd., Newton, NC 28658 or to the South Mountain Children’s Home, P.O. Box 3387, Morganton, NC 28680.
