Charles Phifer “Pete” Abernethy, 86, of Valdese, went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 8, 2026 following a period of declining health.
Pete was born March 17, 1940 in Burke County, a son of the late Harrison and Allie Bowman Abernethy. He was a proud United States Navy veteran. He enjoyed listening to music, and he was especially fond of the Malpass Brothers. He loved old cars, but, even more, he loved his family.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in passing by two daughters, Melanie Abernethy and Melissa Abernethy; a sister, Sandy Heavner; two brothers, Monk Abernethy and Rick Abernethy; and his beloved animal companion, Petey.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of fifty-three years, Sharon W. Abernethy of the home; two daughters, Melinda “Mindy” Abernethy of Valdese and Amanda “Mandy” Abernethy of Valdese; two sons, Charles Abernethy (Ginger) of Connelly Springs and Joel Abernethy of the home; a brother, Lynn Paul Abernethy; a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, July 19, 2026 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Sunday, July 19, 2026 from 2:00 PM – 3:00 PM at Heritage Funeral Service.
