David Vivan Howell

David Vivan “Dave” Howell, 96, of Valdese passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025 at Grace Ridge, following a period of declining health.

Dave was born March 22, 1929 in Greenville, SC to the late Vivan Howell and Grace Hudson Howell. He was a faithful member of United Baptist Church and was a retired cooperate pilot; where he flew proudly for the Milliken Corporation. When Dave asked his father for a motorcycle, his father said, “Absolutely not” and Dave’s reply was, “Well I’ll get an airplane then.” And that is how his love for flight began. He served honorably in the United States Army wanting to see the world, but when the General at his command learned he knew how to work on airplanes, that was his new duty; where the general was is where Dave would be also to work on his plane. And if you knew Dave at all, you knew him to be the most polite and tidy gentleman there ever was. He will be missed by many, but we as family are comforted in knowing he is with his beloved wife, Reba.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Reba West Howell; and eight siblings.

He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2025 at 12:00 PM at United Baptist Church with Dr. Steve Mathews and Rev. Barry Camp officiating. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at the church.
