Doris Jean Smart Suttles, 89, of Morganton, went to her Heavenly Home on Wednesday October 14, 2026, at Amorem, Burke Hospice, after a period of declining health.

Mrs. Suttles was born on August 13, 1937, in Burke County, a daughter of the late Rev. John Henry and Ethel Dora Powell Smart. She was a faithful and active member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church serving in her younger years as a children’s Sunday School teacher and member of the WMU. She retired as a seamstress in the textile manufacturing industry. Doris was known for her flowers and as a loving, nurturing mother to her children as well as her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Parker Suttles.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughter, Regina Ann Suttles Austin Hensley of Morganton, sons, Terry Jay Suttles (former wife, Sandra Deal Suttles), Jerry Ray Suttles and wife Sandy of Connelly Springs, two sisters, Nancy Smart Mitchum of Granite Falls, and Patty Smart Woods and husband Wayne of Morganton. Also surviving are the apples of her eye, her grandchildren, Christopher Dane Austin and wife Heather, and Vanessa Shea Austin, Colton Leviette Suttles and wife Megan, Casey Ruth Suttles McCurry and husband Dean, Amber Paige Suttles Pearson, Katelyn Adair Suttles and Lawson Parker Suttles and wife Haley, great-grandchildren, Lily Hildebran, Parker Lowman, Jillian Pearson, Kerrigan Suttles, Raylan Suttles, Harrison Suttles, Benson Suttles ,Cara McCurry, Hannah McCurry, Caleb McCurry, Aribella Suttles, and Abigail Suttles.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 11 until 12:00 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Morganton.

Funeral Services for Doris Jean Smart Suttles will be held at 12:00 P.M. Tuesday October 20, 2026, at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Jack Hodges, Jr. and Rev. Dean McCurry officiating. Interment will follow in the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
