Listen to Obituary

George Wayne Stamey, 79, of Valdese, NC, entered his heavenly home on 9/22/2025, surrounded by the love of his family. Born September 28, 1945, he was the son of the late William Conley Stamey and Conis Young Stamey.

Wayne’s greatest joy in life was knowing and serving his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. A faithful servant, he devoted his life to sharing Christ’s love with his family, friends, church, and community. A long-time member of High Peak Baptist Church, Wayne served faithfully as Trustee, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Treasurer for 35 years. He was known for his steadfast faith and his favorite quote, often shared with family and friends, from Dr. Charles Stanley: “Trust in the Lord in all things and and leave the consequences to Him.”

Wayne also served his country honorably in the United States Army National Guard for 8 years. He retired from the North Carolina Department of Corrections after 27 years of service at Caldwell Correctional Center, Burke Youth Center, Extradition, and as a DOC Instructor. He also managed the Rainbow Pantry for 11 years, always serving others with kindness and integrity.

Wayne enjoyed the simple joys of life – working on his tractor, planting a garden, and sharing conversations with friends. Most of all, he cherished time with his beloved family. His wife, children, and grandchildren were his greatest earthly treasures, and he delighted in teaching, encouraging, and loving them. Wayne was a devoted student of God’s word and lived out his faith by serving in church, helping others, and finding joy in the blessings of everyday life; whether enjoying good food, working outdoors, or simply being present with those he loved.

In addition to his parents, Wayne is preceded in death by his brother Ralph Stamey.

Wayne is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Sherlene McCall Stamey; daughter, Kelly Stamey of Valdese, NC; son, Jim Stamey and wife Cierra of Valdese, NC; and his two cherished grandchildren , Kaleb Stamey and Kasen Stamey, who were the pride and joy of his life.

He is also survived by sisters Barbara Cagnoni and husband Terry of Lake Havasu, Arizona, and Evelyn Higbee of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho; brother Charles Stamey and wife Diane of Buffalo, Wyoming; and sister in law, Carol Stamey of, Rockingham, NC along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will miss him deeply.

Wayne lived a life that reflected his Savior—faithful, humble, and full of love. His journey on earth was marked by his devotion to Christ. He has now entered into what he lived and longed for his whole life: to walk beside Jesus for eternity.

“Well done, good and faithful servant… enter into the joy of your Lord.” (Matthew 25:23)
