Georgia Braswell Skidmore, was born on March 17, 1928, at her parents’ home on Sugar Mountain. She was the youngest child of Dolly Bowman Braswell and Romulus Linney Braswell.
After graduating from Newland High School in 1945, she traveled to Morganton to work in the diet kitchen of Broughton Hospital. At that time, she met James Edward Skidmore, whom she married on December 20, 1947. They settled in Valdese and raised a family of four children.
Georgia was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She was a talented seamstress, marvelous cook, rescuer of cats, lover of all God’s creation, and singer of lullabies. She was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Valdese, serving in Vacation Bible School and in the children’s nursery department. Georgia was a devoted student of the Bible and a child of God.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James E. Skidmore, a grand-daughter, Christy Rollyson Baker, great-grand-daughter, Mackenzie Franklin, siblings, Ethel Bailey, Jim Bailey, Hugh Braswell, Henry Braswell, Louise Rominger and Martin Braswell.
Those left to cherish her memory are her children, Candace Yount (Terry), Lizbeth Rollyson (David), Timothy James Skidmore (Annette), and Jonathan Scott Skidmore (Mary Jane). Seven grandchildren, Jennifer Yount, Laura Anderson (Ben), Brandon Rollyson (Kim), Katie Franklin (Cody), James Skidmore and Mercedes Skidmore, six great-grandchildren, Ben Anderson,Jr. , Mary Anderson, Mason Baker, Meredith Rollyson, Caroline Rollyson, Avery Franklin and four great great-grandchildren, Brynlee Anderson, Oaklee Anderson, Hudson Anderson and Santi Leon.
There will be a celebration of Georgia’s life at 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday April 14, 2026, at the First Baptist Church, Valdese, with Rev. Dr. Josh Lail officiating. Interment will follow in the Hillcrest Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 4 until 5:00 P.M. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, Valdese.
