James “Jim” Otho Merritt, age 87, of Morganton, North Carolina, peacefully passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at his home after a period of declining health. His presence in the lives of family and friends will be dearly missed, and his memory cherished by all who knew him.
Jim was born on November 22, 1938, in Fort Mill, South Carolina, to the late Robert W. Merritt and Allene Turner Merritt. He was a devoted member of Catawba Valley Masonic Lodge #217 for more than 60 years, a lifelong Shriner, and a proud member of the North Carolina Society of the Sons of the American Revolution. Jim enjoyed a long and successful career in textile management, where he was respected for his leadership and strong work ethic. He concluded his career in 1999 with five years of service with the State of North Carolina. Affectionately known as “Big Daddy,” Jim was cherished for his outgoing spirit and warm personality. He found great joy in fishing, hunting, refurbishing and buying cars, and sharing good meals with good friends. His laughter, stories, and generous heart left a lasting impression on his family, friends, and acquaintances.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda Francis Merritt, and his brothers, Robert Merritt and Gerald Merritt.He is survived by his son, James Timothy “Tim” Merritt and wife, Judy, of Holly Springs, North Carolina; his daughters, Lisa Stephens and husband, Scott, of Tampa, Florida, and Michelle Merritt Leonard and husband, Michael, of Bethania, North Carolina; and his cherished grandchildren, Amanda and Lindsey Merritt, Thompson and Merritt Stephens, and Sarah and Iris Leonard. Also surviving are his sister, Linda Wilson of Spartanburg, South Carolina; three nephews; special friend Lou McRary of Granite Falls, North Carolina, and his beloved dog and faithful companion, Pete.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 1, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese, North Carolina.
A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 2, 2026, in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service, with Rev. Marvin Wiley officiating. Masonic rites will be conducted by Catawba Valley Masonic Lodge #217. Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shriners Children’s Hospital or to Catawba Valley Baptist Church.
