James Lewis Simmons, 73, of Drexel, passed away unexpectedly on Monday July 6, 2026 at UNC Healthcare in Morganton.
James was born on June 5, 1953 in Burke County to the late Horace King Greeley Simmons, Jr. and Carleen Carpenter Simmons.
James served the Town of Valdese as the Utilities Director for the Water and Waste Management Department, where his extensive knowledge of computer systems proved invaluable. Beyond his professional role, James was also the unofficial town historian, possessing a remarkable understanding of Drexel’s rich past. James was a vital asset to the town of Valdese and surrounding communities. His expertise in computers was widely recognized, as was his passion for local history. He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Those left to cherish is memory include his wife of 53 years, Anita Gail Dale Simmons of the home; one son, Brent Lewis Simmons of Drexel; one grandson, Dalton Ray Simmons of Drexel; and two brothers surviving, Arrie Simmons and wife Flo and John Thomas Simmons and wife Penny.
The family will receive friends on Friday July 10, 2026 from 10:00 AM until 10:30 AM in the Chapel of Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum in Morganton.
Entombment will follow in the Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum.
