Marie Sturgill

Marie Maney Sturgill, 87, of Rutherford College, NC departed this life to her heavenly home to be with the love of her life on Saturday, December 6th, 2025 at her residence in the company of her loving family. Mrs. Sturgill was born on May 15th, 1938 in Swain County, North Carolina to the late Grant Posey Maney and Eva Avie Matthews.

As a young woman, she worked at Valdese Elementary School serving children in the cafeteria. She spent much of her life afterwards caring for her family as a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Marie loved her Lord Jesus Christ and always looked forward to being united with Him one day. She was a brilliant cook and gave the warmest hugs to all who knew her. She was a member of Shoup’s Grove Baptist Church.

Left to cherish her memory include sons Bill Sturgill (Andrea) and Bob Sturgill; her grandchildren, the lights of her life, Sandi Taylor, Kristen Nichols, Heather Helton (Brent), Tammy Sturgill, and Alisha Carswell (Danrick); and her beloved great-grandchildren Kat Vines, Libby Vines, Roxy Taylor, Will Helton, Blaine Carswell, Avie Helton, Olivia Maltba, Blaze Taylor and Callen Ellis. Also surviving her death include nieces, nephews, family friends, honorary son Darrell ‘Sarge’ Sturgill, and sister at heart Brenda Robins Sturgill.

Mrs. Sturgill is preceded in death by her 11 siblings, her special niece Denise, and her husband and soulmate, Wayne Douglas Sturgill.

In keeping with Marie’s wishes, a private service for the family will be held in the Burke Memorial Park Mausoleum Chapel.

Pallbearers will be Bill Sturgill, Bob Sturgill, Will Helton, Blaine Carswell, Blaze Taylor, Danrick Carswell, and Brent Helton.
