Rita Lou Burns, 75, of Valdese passed away on Friday, September 4, 2026 at her residence following a period of declining health.

Rita was born July 24, 1951 in Burke County, to the late Josheph Worth Burns and Mary Houser Burns. She was a member of Lenoir Church of Christ and devoted her career to education as a special needs teacher. Over thirty-six years, Rita served students in numerous schools and facilities before retiring from teaching. She had several different hobbies that kept her busy during her retirement years, from being a yard sale expert to playing bingo and being a member of the Red Hat Society.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by brothers, Benny Burns and Johnny Burns; infant brother, Carroll Glenn Burns; sisters, Betty Pate and Rachel Greene; and her dog Maximus.

She is survived by her son, Benton Blount and his wife Ashley; grandchildren, Jaxon, Brooklyn, and Lincoln; brother, Nelson Burns; sister, Janie Burns; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is also survived by friends Dennis, Doris, Barbara, and Nurse Mindy, as well as many loving friends, neighbors, and caregivers. The family extends a special thank-you to all who cared for Rita and supported her family.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2026 at 3:00 PM in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service with Rev. Dr. Cory Smith officiating.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM prior to the service.
