Shirlene Deal Spann

Mrs. Shirlene Deal Spann, 89, of Granite Falls, died on Wednesday, December 24, 2025, in her home, following a period of declining health.

Born on November 26, 1936, in Burke County, Shirlene was the first of seven children of John A. Deal and Cora Shidal Deal. She retired from the hosiery industry, where she spent many years operating a sewing machine. Shirlene loved to read books (Westerns, mysteries, who-done-it and romance novels to name a few. She possessed a great love for flowers and beautiful things in bloom. Shirlene was also a charter member of Solid Rock Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, Shirlene was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Paul Luther Spann, to brothers, John Ervin “Buck” Deal, Ricky Deal and a sister Norma Jean Deal Causby.

Those left to cherish her memory are her four children, Harold Spann of the home, Carol Burns and husband Grant of Newton, Kenneth Spann and girlfriend Maria of Valdese and Keith Spann and wife Robin of Morganton, two sisters, Frances Stovall of Connelly Springs and Lorena Erwood of Icard. Also surviving are the apples of her eye, her grandchildren, Brittany Spann, Kaleb Spann (McKenzie), Destiny Little (Kendall), Ray Brittain (Heather), John Brittain (Kate), Mary Brittain Frye (Justin), Kendra Spann Turner (Josh), 11 Great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Shirlene Deal Spann will be held at 3:00 P.M. Tuesday December 30, 2025, in the Chapel of Heritage Funeral Service, Valdese, with Rev Stacey Layne officiating. Interment will follow in the Solid Rock Baptist Church Cemetery.
